For many organizations that run SQL workloads in the cloud, Microsoft’s Azure SQL Managed Instance General Purpose (GP) tier has long provided a cost-effective environment for line-of-business applications. As databases expand and businesses seek to onboard workloads with higher online transaction processing (OLTP) and online analytical processing (OLAP) demands, the storage I/O limits of those classic GP tiers can put a ceiling on growth. Azure’s Business Critical tier can remove those performance and capacity limits, but for many companies, that path involves a premium price for capacity and features they may not want.
With the Azure Next-gen GP tier, Microsoft is directly addressing the tension between performance headroom and cost control. Next-gen GP provides a higher IOPS ceiling and expanded memory options within the same managed service model as the classic GP tier—and all at comparable baseline pricing. For database administrators and cloud architects evaluating whether to migrate existing classic GP instances or provision new workloads on Next-gen GP, the practical question is straightforward: Does the Next-gen GP tier translate to real workload gains that hold up when you factor in cost? In a recent study, we used hands-on benchmarking to find the answer.
We used the HammerDB benchmark’s OLTP and OLAP workloads to test three Azure SQL Managed Instance configurations: classic GP (baseline), Next-gen GP (baseline), and Next-gen GP (boosted) with expanded memory and a higher IOPS ceiling. We measured both OLTP and OLAP throughput, and then calculated cost per operation across pay-as-you-go, 3-year reserved, and Azure Hybrid Benefit pricing.
Next-gen GP (baseline) delivered 2.66 times the OLTP throughput at an identical cost.
Next-gen GP (baseline) delivered 1.40 times the OLAP query sets per hour of classic GP at an identical cost.
Next-gen GP (boosted) reached up to 10.88 times the OLTP throughput of classic GP.
Next-gen GP (boosted) reached up to 3.89 times the OLAP query sets per hour of classic GP.
Next-gen GP (boosted) delivered up to 7.80 times the performance per dollar of classic GP.
Because the cost is the same for classic and Next-gen GP baseline configurations, companies can capture baseline performance gains by shifting to Next-gen GP without revising their budget. Those with room to spend more can scale further with the boosted configuration. For teams looking to improve database performance and value without moving to a premium-priced tier like Business Critical, Next-gen GP offers a strong path forward.
